Some places leave a mark on a community that time simply can't erase. Aviation High School in Redondo Beach was one of those places — a school that shaped generations of South Bay kids, gave them identity, pride, and a home away from home.

A School Born from the South Bay's Aviation Roots
Aviation High School opened its doors in Fall of 1957, serving the Redondo Beach community as part of the Redondo Beach Unified School District. Its name was a nod to the South Bay's deep ties to the aerospace and aviation industry — a region that was home to major defense contractors and a proud tradition of innovation in the skies.
Home of the Falcons, the school quickly became a cornerstone of the local community. Students came from across the South Bay, and the Falcon spirit ran strong through every graduating class.
Life as a Falcon
For the students who walked those halls, Aviation wasn't just where they went to class — it was where they grew up. Friday night football games under the lights, hallway friendships that lasted decades, teachers who pushed you to be better, and a campus culture that was unmistakably South Bay.

The Closing of an Era
Aviation High School closed its doors in 1982, a decision that hit the community hard. For many alumni and families, it felt like losing a piece of the South Bay's identity. The campus that had been filled with laughter, learning, and Falcon pride went quiet.
The reasons behind the closure — Aviation High School in Redondo Beach closed in 1982 primarily due to declining enrollment and severe budgetary constraints following the end of the post-World War II baby boom — were practical, but the emotional impact on the community was anything but. Generations of Falcons had called that school home, and no administrative decision could erase what was built there.
A Legacy That Lives On
Though Aviation High School is no longer with us in its original form, its legacy is very much alive — in the alumni who still rep their Falcons pride, in the stories passed down, and in the tight-knit community that formed within those walls.
